Shaven Primates – “Kill The Algorithm”

Oxford group Shaven Primates just put out a brilliant four track record that grabs you immediately. The collection is “Kill The Algorithm” and it is a fierce dive into anxiety and control. The band combines elements of dark wave, punk, and art rock to build a sound that is entirely their own.

The band packs these tracks with grinding, rumbling basslines and wailing guitars. You get thundering drums underneath vocals that beautifully croon and scream, creating a wonderful emotional release. The record opens with “SAVIOUR”, a heavy track focusing on the human habit of looking outside ourselves to fix internal problems. You can hear fantastic echoes of nineties grunge and thrash metal here, reminding me of Placebo and Nine Inch Nails.

The second song is “PIONEER WAY”, which channels pure late seventies punk rage. It started from their guitarist Tom venting about people putting flags on lamp posts, and it captures that nervous modern energy perfectly. Then you get “FEED”, an aggressive track hitting out at online figures who exploit the anxieties of young men. It features heavy patterns reminiscent of Rage Against The Machine and Metallica, balancing sharp anger with massive guitar hooks, and finally, the title track “KILL THE ALGORITHM” addresses how social media platforms poison young minds with propaganda. It carries the haunting spirit of Radiohead and Joy Division, wrapping the record up with a powerful warning.
