Translucent Veil – “The Veil”

It feels like a true breath of fresh air when a classic, full-bodied rock sound lands on your desk, and “Translucent Veil” by Translucent Veil delivers exactly that experience. Recorded and mixed at Sonark Media down in Hillsborough, NC, this album feels like a labor of love made by people who live and breathe the absolute golden era of rock music, and you can hear that pure appreciation for timeless studio craft poured into every single channel, making the whole release sound both huge and delightfully grounded.

The record opens with “The Veil”, a focus track that immediately sets an inviting, expansive mood at just over four and a half minutes. From there, the music shifts into “Last Night’s Dream” and then straight into another focus piece, “Time We’re Moving On,” which hits a wonderfully steady groove. What keeps you hooked as you listen through the tracklist is how naturally the songwriting shifts. One minute you get something grounded in deep introspection, and the next moment the band switches gears into playful whimsy or sharp social commentary. They even dip into brief underwater soundscapes on “Under the Sea” before taking you straight into “Dreams and Sin”.

The vocal arrangements on this record deserve a real shoutout, especially with legendary San Francisco singer, songwriter, and producer Chris von Sneidern hopping on board to contribute his incredible vocal abilities across several tracks. His parts lift the entire mix, blending smoothly with the vintage instrumentals. And knowing what drummer Tony Boutin went through to finish his drum tracks gives the heavy, nearly twenty-minute closing track “Seasons Must Change” an incredible emotional punch. Hearing those drums kick in after everything he faced makes the rhythm section sound downright triumphant.
