Passing Grade – “Madrid”
Passing Grade doesn’t really sound like anyone else right now, and “Madrid” makes that pretty clear from the jump. The verse instrumental pulls from new wave in a way that feels considered rather than borrowed. It has that loose, slightly tense quality that a lot of that era did well, the band works with it without overdoing it and then the chorus hits, and the whole thing shifts. Trust me, this track deserves your full attention.
The lyrics are rich and unique, and the vocal performance carries that without making it feel forced or dramatic. It’s understated in a way that lands harder than something more theatrical would. The band grew out of the upstate New York area, a place that doesn’t get nearly enough credit for the music it produces, and you can hear something regional in this. Not in a self-conscious way, just in the way the song moves and breathes. It feels like it comes from somewhere real.
Honestly, “Madrid” is a strong opening move for whatever direction Passing Grade is heading in next. The mix of 90s alt-rock bones and writing that feels current but not trendy is something I’ve been hoping more bands would try. The balance they strike here is genuinely hard to find.
Go back and listen to their earlier stuff if you haven’t already. And if you want to keep up with what they put out the rest of this year, follow Passing Grade now. Worth staying in the loop on.
