YACOVELLI – “Since Emilia”

YACOVELLI has a new track out called Since Emilia, and it packs a heavy, raw punch. Frontman Alex Yacovelli handled the production himself, blending a gritty Bowery punk sound with a thick Seattle grunge groove. The track kicks off in a surprising way, starting with a quiet melody on a Baglama, which is a small Greek folk instrument. There is a great story about a taxi driver telling Alex that the tiny instrument was originally sized to be played inside jail cells. Myth or not, the tuning translates into a heavy, down tuned guitar groove that takes over the track.

The main hook is massive, pulling in elements of stoner rock and classic psychedelia. You can easily hear the influence of bands like Soundgarden and The Beatles, giving the song a thick, classic rock flavor. The lyrics are written like a riddle, giving you a puzzle to solve while the guitars crash around the vocals. There is a trippy music video to go with it that tracks a trip from Liverpool to New York, showing the band floating in the ocean and soaring through the clouds.

I love how the small folk instrument sets up such a massive rock groove. Anyone looking for genuine, energetic rock music should go back and check out the previous releases from YACOVELLI.
