The Black Plague Doctors – “EFF.SEE.DEE.IYEE”
I wasn’t sure what to expect going into EFF.SEE.DEE.IYEE, but it pulled me in pretty quickly. It sounds like two people set up in a room and just started messing around until something clicked, and then kept going. That loose, unpolished approach ends up being the whole point. This one deserves your full attention.
“Dr. Curt Conners” opens things in a slightly odd way that works better the longer it plays, and “This is Cooking” feels like the moment where everything loosens up. You can tell this wasn’t meant to be vocal-heavy at first, but when the lyrics show up, they don’t feel out of place. It’s more like they wandered in and stayed. My favorite is “Old Burner Phones”. I also can’t ignore the artwork. It’s busy, kind of chaotic, and full of random details, but it fits. It looks like a lived-in space, which lines up with how the music comes across.
Nothing here sounds forced. That’s probably why I kept replaying it. I’d say give it a spin, then go dig into their earlier stuff and see how this fits into their catalog. Definitely follow them too. Curious where they take this next, what do you think?
