heavyskint – “Vice”
Glasgow band heavyskint are kicking off their recorded work with “Vice”, and it’s a solid introduction to who they are right now. They’ve already built a name for themselves with sold out shows around the city, so hearing the studio version of a track that’s been with them since the earliest days is interesting. “Vice” was the first song they wrote together, and the only one they’ve kept from back then, which says a lot about how strongly they connect with it.
They recorded it with Chris McCrory, and the story behind the session matches the rough around the edges sound they’re known for. Jacob Hunter pushed his voice so hard during one take that the studio got a noise complaint from next door. Jamie Kelly even recorded parts by punching his guitar, which adds its own kind of character. Knowing those details gives the track a bit more shape when you listen, because you can picture how chaotic that room must have been.
The single comes across like a snapshot of a group still pretty new but already locked into their identity. It’s loud, packed with noisy guitars, and has the kind of tension that probably hits even harder at their shows. If heavyskint keep building on this, they’re going to make a lot more noise in 2025.
