SIR EVAN WISH – “Alone in a Crowd”

SIR EVAN WISH created a deeply moving record with “Alone in a Crowd,” a ten-track piano project recorded in late 2019 right before a planned tour in Japan got cancelled. The title took on a much bigger meaning once 2020 hit, but the music itself stands entirely on its own.

Opening piece “The Hill” brings dramatic harmonic shifts and it’s my favorite. That patient approach carries right into the title track, where a low counter melody rolls under the main line, weaving unexpected harmony as it flows.

You can hear real life experiences across these compositions. “Fleeting Beauty” sits in a moderate tempo with minor key suspense, named after a Japanese friend’s translation of the Cherry Blossom festival. Then there is “(For) Just a Penny,” a piece with a lively latin jazz spirit that he wrote while recovering from a severe accident involving a shattered ankle and fractured wrist. Moving from that physical recovery to lighter, playful cuts like “Silhouette” and “Carousel” shows how much heart went into every session. He closes with “I Like Us,” finding a clear resolution through rich harmonic movement.
