The House Flies – “Lost Literature”

The House Flies are a four piece dark alternative and post punk band from Moline, Illinois. Their single Lost Literature is the second single from their upcoming seven track album Lions and Ore, which hits stores on November 6 via Wilhelm and Sons Entertainment Company.

The track builds on a steady drum beat and a prominent bass line that gives it a danceable post punk pulse. Alex Riggen sings and plays guitar alongside Burnie Eckhardt on guitar, Ozzie Woods on bass, and Nick Pompou on drums. The song keeps the dark character of the record while bringing in a more direct pop pull and wider guitar textures.

The lyrics move across a highway night setting with rental cars, low stereos, porch lights, and clover. The vocal phrases repeat over and over around questions of identity, memory, and disappearance and that constant repetition keeps the song moving at a steady pace without losing any momentum.

The official music video takes that motion in a strange direction. The video uses handmade marionettes inside a sparse wooden room. The faded four by three imagery shows close views of painted faces, beadwork, fabric, strings, and feet. That worn and tactile look keeps the video tied to the physical world of the album.

This release follows their September single Derelict Crawl. Both tracks show different ways the group approaches directness, with the earlier song using heavy force while this new single relies on melody, rhythm, and a sharp hook. The album itself was mixed by Ross Mixes and mastered by Michael Briggs.

You can find the new album on Bandcamp, major streaming platforms, and a limited run of 100 black vinyl copies starting November 6. The band will celebrate the album release that night at Raccoon Motel in Davenport, Iowa, with King of the Weirdos, Company Dimes, and Half Loves. They also have show dates lined up in Iowa City, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis for early next year.
