LeBarons – “Running River”
There is a raw, captivating energy coming out of Toronto and Hamilton lately, and it belongs entirely to LeBarons. Their single “Running River” is an absolute stunner of independent alt-country. The song is a slow burn that builds a massive amount of tension, starting out with a moody atmosphere reminiscent of classic Fleetwood Mac before completely igniting into an anthemic, Bruce Springsteen style finish.
Producer and bassist John Dinsmore deserves a lot of credit for the production. The rhythm section lays down a groove that is incredibly controlled yet completely relentless, creating a sturdy foundation for the rest of the band. On top of that rhythm, the music opens up into a dreamlike, ethereal space. Chris MacDonald handles the vocals and songwriting, and his performance here is remarkable. His delivery has a desperate, haunting quality that immediately commands attention. He brings the same sharp storytelling ability found in his novels to this music, painting a dark picture with a giant, catchy chorus that hooks you immediately.
The artwork paired with the release is fantastic too. The image shows a figure swimming near the surface of light blue water while a massive shark rises up from the deep with its jaws wide open. The contrast between the bright red band name text at the top and the tense, underwater scene perfectly mirrors the music. It gives you that exact feeling of calm, floating beauty right before everything explodes.
The band has crafted an absolute masterpiece here, balancing a ragged indie glory with expert songwriting. If you are new to their music, you should definitely check out their 2023 album, Days Are Mountains, which features their excellent track “Through To You“. LeBarons are easily one of the most exciting independent bands making music right now.
You should absolutely follow LeBarons on social media and streaming platforms to stay updated on everything they have coming out during the rest of 2026. They are the real deal, and they deserve your full support as they continue to build something truly special.
