Divergent – “I Really Want To Love You (So Bad)”

Divergent is a band that originally built their reputation on hard rock, but their new single, “I Really Want To Love You (So Bad)”, takes a completely different direction. It is a massive departure from the style they chiseled over the last year and a half, trading blazing tracks for a soulful vibration that heavily channels the Motown era.

The sound is built on dreamy piano riffs, a full-bodied bassline, satisfying cymbal splashes, and a laid-back beat. It sets a slow, swaying rhythm that acts as the foundation for an R&B-inspired melody. The whole atmosphere creates an interesting contrast with the story being told. On the surface, it plays like a classic love song about deep longing and desire. The narrator talks about being consumed by thoughts of someone from the moment he wakes up until his head hits the pillow, singing with soaring harmonies and intense, moonstruck declarations.

However, the track gets fascinating when you notice the hesitation. The phrase “want to” gives away a real distance between his feelings and reality. He admits that he does not know if the other person truly sees him. Because of that doubt, he hesitates to share his dreams, waiting until he feels fully understood in return.

It is a really strong release that shows a completely different side of the trio. Make sure to follow Divergent on social media to keep up with their new releases this year.
