Pol Tonin – “New Home”

There’s something quietly absorbing about New Home, the debut from Pol Tonin. You can tell right away this isn’t a rushed or overly polished project. It sounds like time was taken, not just in recording, but in figuring out what needed to be said.

Daniel Pabst approaches this album from a deeply personal place, and that shift comes through in a very natural way. The story behind it, moving from an abstract idea about architecture into something shaped by impending fatherhood, gives the whole record a sense of purpose without ever feeling heavy-handed. It’s reflective, sometimes fragile, but never distant.

“Dear Pol”, the first single, sets the tone nicely and it was recorded in a makeshift studio in his country house, it has that quiet, lived-in quality that makes you lean in a bit closer. I like the balance between his background in improvised music and his songwriting instincts, and it works in his favor.

As the album moves forward, titles like “Dear Father”, “Mother”, and “I Am Coming Home” hint at a full-circle kind of narrative. You get the sense of someone sorting through old memories while preparing for something new and the minimal setup, with Pabst recording everything himself, adds to that intimacy.

I walked away from this album feeling like I’d spent time inside someone’s real thoughts, not just a collection of songs. I’d definitely recommend checking out his earlier work too, and keeping up with what he does next, so go follow Pol Tonin and stay tuned.
