Zachary Mason – “5…4…3…2…1…”

Zachary Mason’s new EP “5…4…3…2…1…” is a cool release that’s easy to get into, it’s only three songs long, but each track plays like a chapter in a bigger story. The first one, “5…4…3…2…1…”, sets the scene with people having to leave Earth behind after years of damage. Then “The Funky Martians” takes things in a different direction, where the new arrivals run into Martians who aren’t so welcoming. It’s kind of funny the way it all plays out, and the track has a playful edge to it that makes you want to replay it. The last song, “Earthsick”, is my favorite.

What is also impressive here is the team Zachary pulled together. Nate Barnes on drums gives the songs real drive, and John Thomasson’s bass work on the first two tracks fits perfectly. The last track is different because Zachary plays bass himself on his keyboard, which is a nice personal touch. Derrick Lin handled the mixing and mastering, and everything sounds tight without losing the fun quirks Zachary likes to include.

If you’re into this release, go back and check out his earlier songs too. And definitely follow him on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or TikTok to keep up with whatever he puts out next.
