Sugar Scars – “Dark Charm”

The duo from El Paso and Juarez already made waves with last year’s “Rhythmic Body Reflexes”, and this new track builds on that with something even more hypnotic and layered. Sugar Scars is my favorite duo of the week, and I really enjoyed their music.
“Dark Charm” doesn’t really fit neatly into one genre, which is kind of the point. It has this electronic, indie-dance vibe mixed with a shoegaze and psychedelic feel, and now they’ve brought in more of a darker, gothic mood. It sounds like a weird combo on paper, but they make it work in a way that feels totally natural. The rhythm section is super tight, there’s this percussion-meets-snare groove that locks in, and the bassline dances around it in a way that’s both smooth and a little unsettling in the best way.
The whole thing pulls you in fast, it’s catchy, but not in a surface-level way. There’s this strange balance between something joyful and something a little sad, and somehow it clicks. It’s definitely a standout release heading into fall.
If you’re into genre-bending stuff that’s got personality and depth, keep an eye on Sugar Scars. Follow Sugar Scars on social media so you don’t miss what’s coming next in 2025.
