Powers of the Monk – “Bread & Circuses”

Powers of the Monk have been steadily building an impressive catalog over the past few years, and their latest single “Bread & Circuses” might be one of their boldest yet. The Michigan duo, joined here by guest drummer John O’Reilly Jr., take on a heavy subject, the inner world of a schizophrenia patient, and spin it into a track that’s both unsettling and strangely captivating. The song paints the picture of a patient dreaming of escape, wandering into a circus, and witnessing lions turn on the clowns.

Powers of the Monk have a history of keeping things fresh from release to release. If you look back, they’ve gone from the early “Firefly” days, through “Switchin’ Rails”, “Puffy Head”, and even a wild cover of “It’s Your Voodoo Working”. Each single feels different, but it still connects back to their own voice as a band. With “Bread & Circuses”, they’ve pushed that even further, blending their usual intensity with a story that feels bigger than the song itself.

If you’ve been following them, this is another strong reason to stay tuned. And if you haven’t yet, now’s a good time to start. Keep an eye on their socials, 2025 looks like it’s going to be another packed year for Powers of the Monk.
