Novaix Onyx – “Close”
The lead track “CLOSE” off Onyx’s six-song EP is a fun piece of UK garage-house. Sitting at a fast speed of 134 BPM, the music builds its beat around bouncy two-step drums, strong organ bass hits, and a heavy low sound underneath. A catchy 90s-style vocal line plays again and again in the background, keeping the energy steady while all the other parts shift around it.
The vocal style switches between a soft low talking voice and a quick, heavy rap part in the second half. That second verse easily becomes the biggest moment of the whole track. Instead of relying on a big loud music drop, the high point happens right there with the rap verse before moving into a smooth beat and stopping suddenly. It keeps things fun to listen to, especially with the way the lyrics mix English and Korean words together across the hooks. My favorite tracks are “Under”, “Loaded”, and “Hold it”.
The main idea behind “CLOSE” gives it a clever touch. The track plays on two different meanings of the word, comparing being near someone with being shut out. The lyrics start like a tease about keeping people far away, but the middle part turns things around, showing she is locked inside listening to the door slam shut. That story about staying in control and losing control runs through the whole set of songs on the EP, making the music feel real and personal. The overall sound sits right between club dance beats and clean Korean pop, bringing to mind artists like PinkPantheress and Sammy Virji while keeping its own fresh feel. It is energetic, stylish, and easily one of the best dance records to come out this season.
