Lekursi – “Amarna Letters”

I recently visited Egypt and today I discovered Lekursi’s new single “Amarna Letters”, and it caught my attention in a way most music doesn’t these days. The song is built around the Amarna tablets and Akhenaten, and to be honest, it’s one of those songs that can stick in your head all day.

The blend of ancient and modern sounds is done well here, and you get the sense that Lekursi has a real relationship with this material, not just surface-level interest. BBC Introducing described the music as unique, and I’d agree with that assessment. The lucid dream influence Lekursi talks about is noticeable too. There’s an otherworldly quality that holds your attention all the way through.

The parallels between Akhenaten’s revolution and today aren’t forced down your throat, but they’re present if you’re paying attention, and Lekursi mentions this being a lesson from our human past that’s still relevant, and you can hear that intention in the track itself.

If you want music with some actual depth and an artist willing to take risks, check out “Amarna Letters.” Make sure to follow Lekursi on social media so you don’t miss new releases coming in the new year.
