Julianna Joy – “20 Minutes Away”

Julianna Joy writes songs that feel like you’ve heard them before, in the best way. “20 Minutes Away” is built around that specific ache of being close to something and still not quite there. It’s a well-worn emotional premise, but she doesn’t fumble it.

The production is clean and professional and the hook lands on the first listen and doesn’t wear out quickly, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. Her voice sits right in the middle of confident and exposed, and the whole thing moves.

Fans of her debut album SOMEBODY CALL THE FIREMEN! will find this familiar. Tracks like “Goldstar” and “Better” set up the same kind of energy: words that feel personal, production that pushes outward. “20 Minutes Away” is that, but tighter. You can listen to those tracks here.

She’s been doing this since she was 17. “Nevermind” came first, then “Cherry Bomb” picked up millions of streams and the growth has been gradual and real, and this track sounds like someone who’s been paying attention to their own development rather than pivoting toward whatever’s working for someone else.

This is the one I keep going back to from her catalog so far. If you haven’t dug into her earlier releases, start there. And follow her, because she’s clearly not done figuring out what she can do. Are you already a fan, or did “20 Minutes Away” catch you off guard?
