Ghost of Panama – “Subterranean Homesick Blues”

Ghost of Panama has done something really special with “Subterranean Homesick Blues”. The West London duo, made up of Cristabel Liu handling lead vocals and Keith Welham on instruments and backing voice, took on a legendary 60-year-old Bob Dylan classic and completely reshaped it. Coming off the success of their debut album “The Last Food on Earth”, they were stuck deciding whether to rest or keep making music. Choosing a summer run of covers turned out to be the perfect middle ground, and this single proves exactly why.

Recorded right at their home studio in West London, this track strips away any temptation to mimic the original. They set out to do things in a totally different way while holding onto the rebellious anti-establishment spirit that made the original matter in the first place, and Liu’s vocals lead the charge with a fresh, fearless energy, supported by Welham’s tight instrumental arrangement. It feels completely distinct from Dylan’s version, giving a classic song a brand new identity without losing its core edge.

It is brilliant when a band respects musical history enough to bend it into new shapes, and Ghost of Panama shows real artistic vision here, balancing tradition with pure innovation. I absolutely love this single, and I think they created a complete masterpiece with this release.
