Flywheel – “CryBaby”

Cork five-piece Flywheel hit all the right notes with their single “CryBaby”. The track acts as the lead entry for their upcoming five-track EP, grabbing attention with a driving post-punk rhythm section that keeps everything moving forward. Over that steady foundation, Mark Tangney and Kieran Curtin stack up dynamic, layered guitars. The guitar work creates a dense, psychedelic sound that carries an early 90s shoegaze style without feeling dated.

The balance of the mix makes the song work so well. Ann Marie Ryan delivers mellow vocals that float over the noise. Her deadpan delivery fits the instrumental backdrop, cutting through the heavy sound and adding a calm center to the distortion, and Paul Kelleher on bass anchors that energy, giving the low end enough space to push the momentum while keeping the arrangement tight. Recorded locally in Cork and produced by Andy Killian, the track manages to sound crisp while keeping its heavy, ethereal atmosphere intact. Every instrument gets room to breathe.

I love this release, and the band created a complete triumph here. It has a balance where every piece of the arrangement fits together naturally. Anyone who enjoys this should go back and listen to Flywheel’s previous releases like their 1996 debut album “She”. They built up a great catalogue over the years that deserves attention.

Be sure to follow Flywheel on Spotify or Bandcamp so you can stay updated on their upcoming live show dates around Cork and Dublin, along with any other new music they put out during the rest of this year.
