Fading Yesterday – “Catching Fire”
“Catching Fire” by Fading Yesterday is my favorite of the week. Justin Topol’s lyrics are the backbone here, and they hold up. The writing draws from personal experience in a way that reads as genuine rather than performative and this is why I loved the release in the first place. You can hear reflection and emotional honesty in every line, and that grounds the track even when the production gets more cinematic and expansive. The indie-pop and emo-alternative influences come through naturally without the song ever feeling like it’s trying to imitate anything specific.
The balance between the electronic elements and the more organic, emotional core is where Fading Yesterday really distinguishes itself. The track manages to feel nostalgic without being stuck in the past, and modern without being cold or distant, and that’s a harder thing to pull off than most people realize.
This is one of the more compelling AI-assisted music projects out there right now. Not because of the technology angle, but because the human element is clearly driving it. Topol’s voice as a lyricist keeps everything grounded.
If you’re just discovering Fading Yesterday, definitely go back and check out the earlier releases. And make sure you’re following Fading Yesterday to keep up with everything they put out for the rest of this year.
