Divergent – “Not Until It’s Right”
Divergent is a trio from Iowa made up of longtime friends James Richards, Mike McAlister, and Paul Richards, and their new single “Not Until It’s Right” is seriously catchy. The song is about a guy who sees a girl dancing and wants to take her home, but she’s not interested unless everything is perfect first. She wants him to dance with her because she needs rhythm to survive, as she puts it.
Paul kicks things off with a drumstick click, and then you get this anthemic dance floor vibe. James wrote the piano part on his cherry wood Chickering upright piano at home, and it’s earwormy as hell. Mike’s walking bass line has this swagger to it, and when all three of them play together, the whole thing just works. Each guy brings something different, and it comes together really well.
Their last single “Runnin’ Free” was heavier, but this one is lighter and more carefree. It’s about enjoying right now instead of worrying about what happens next. They filmed the music video at Sweetwater Studios in Indiana, and you can tell these guys know what they’re doing when you watch them play. The confidence is obvious.
