Dan Webb x Nicole McCabe – “The Self Watches Their Return”
Dan Webb is an Australian composer and producer living in Singapore. His new single, titled “The Self Watches Their Return,” is the final preview of his fifth album, Lion Dance, out on November 13.
The album grew out of Webb moving from Melbourne to Singapore. It takes cues from Buddhist and Taoist ideas, exploring new beginnings, travel, and adjusting to unfamiliar places. This single acts as a quiet, thoughtful moment in the middle of that larger musical story.
The recording brings together a strong group of players. Clive Deamer plays drums, Tim Lefebvre handles bass, Nate Werth adds rhythm, and Nicole McCabe delivers soaring saxophone parts.
The track opens with a sharp electronic keyboard pattern that pops up out of nowhere. Rather than using a standard structure with verses and choruses, the piece stays in just two keys from start to finish. The rhythm section holds a steady groove beneath spacey electric keys. As the song moves forward, it builds toward a loud crescendo with crashing cymbals and tom rolls, while the saxophone plays freely without a fixed melody.
Webb compares the sound to spiritual jazz mixed with a relaxed rock edge, similar to downtempo Pink Floyd or a live jam band. It provides an engaging listening experience that uncovers new layers with every play.
