BirdWorld – “NURTURE”

Gregor Riddell and Adam Teixeira are back as London and Oslo-based duo BirdWorld with their second full-length record, “NURTURE”, out on Dugnad rec. Following up on their 2019 debut album UNDA and their recent run at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, this new 12-track project marks a really cool step forward for their sound.

What makes this album click is how much ground it covers without feeling cluttered, and the duo recorded the project with Øyvind Røsrud at Flerbruket Studio in Norway after spending time in residency at Seanse in Volda. They created a lot of this music remotely during the pandemic, right around the time both members became fathers, and you can really feel that sense of personal care and connection woven throughout the tracks.

They bring in guest appearances from Harpreet Bansal on violin, Maria Dybbroe on saxophone, and Sara Övinge on violin, which adds nice extra layers to their signature mix of cello, kalimbas, field recordings, and electronic textures. Standout moments like “Coroico”, “Let Sleeping Babies Lie”, “Til Liv”, and “Opposite Hinges” show off just how open and expressive their musical style has become. Tracks like “Pinball Flare Lights”, “Lay of the Land”, and “Should You Ever Listen” carry that same spacious feel, making the whole release a rich experience from start to finish.
