A conversation with Melanie Gillott about “Actor”
Q: Hi! What inspired you to write your song “Actor,” and what message do you hope listeners take away from it?
A: I find that I am most inspired by telling stories that reflect relationships and the human experience. “Actor” is a song that explores the themes of authenticity, illusion, and the yearning for genuine connection. The song tells the story of someone who realizes that a potential love interest was just playing pretend and stringing them along. When writing “Actor”, I wanted to draw parallels to the world of drama, where actors embody characters on a stage, addressing the transformative and sometimes deceptive roles that people play in their everyday lives. I want my listeners to know that they deserve real love, real friendship, real human connection—not someone who plays pretend.
Q: Can you describe your songwriting process and how your personal experiences influence your music?
A: My songwriting process is deeply introspective, drawing from my personal experiences. I begin by reflecting upon memories or what is happening in my life at the moment. These emotions and experiences serve as the foundation and from there, I let creativity take the reigns. I often find solace in journaling and writing down my thoughts and feelings which later metamorphose into lyrics. Every song is a true reflection of a chapter in my life, making it not just a song but a story that many can find pieces of themselves in.
Q: You’ve released several singles, such as “summer of ’18,” “summer’s in bloom,” and “When Christmas is With You.” How do you feel your sound has evolved over time?
A: My musical journey has been one of evolution and exploration. With each release there’s been a notable shift, reflecting a deeper introspection and broader sonic landscapes. These progressions mirror both my personal growth and the refining of my artistry.
Q: As a graduate of AMDA College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts, how has your education in acting and performing arts influenced your music career?
A: As an AMDA graduate, my performing arts training deeply influences my music. This background gives my songs a theatrical depth, giving listeners an immersive experience into the world in which the story is being told.
Q: In addition to being a singer/songwriter, you’re also an actress and voice actress. How do you balance these different aspects of your career?
A: I have found that acting, singing, and songwriting all intertwine. While I am an actress, singer, and songwriter, ultimately what I am is a storyteller. Each discipline informs and elevates the other, allowing me to channel my artistic energy seamlessly across all platforms. The convergence of these art forms offers a dynamic and interconnected outlet for my creativity.
Q: Can you share any memorable moments or experiences from your journey as a singer/songwriter so far?
A: Throughout my career so far as a singer/songwriter, there have been a myriad of memorable moments. One moment that I will remember forever is when I released my first ever song, “When Christmas Is With You.” I am so grateful for the unwavering support and love I have received towards me and my music. It is also exciting to me that my music has been played in nearly 60 countries, which really shows how music is truly a universal language.
Q: How do you stay connected with your audience and fans, and how important is their support to you?
A: Staying connected with my fans is very important to me. The genuine joy that I feel when engaging with them is palpable. Every comment, message, or tweet is a reminder of the community rallying behind me. Their stories and words of encouragement have helped shaped my growth both as an artist and an individual. For me, these connections aren’t just about sharing music, but building an inclusive, safe, community.
Q: Are there any artists or musicians who have influenced your sound or style?
A: From the earliest moments in my musical journey, Miley Cyrus has been an inspiration. As a child, I would play her music all the time in the car and would pretend to have concerts in my living room. She is the first artist that truly captivated my attention and made me believe in the magic of music because of her dynamic range in both her music and style. Miley’s spirit, evolution, and unapologetic authenticity has resonated with me deeply. Her fearless approach to music, blending genres, and pushing boundaries has served as a blueprint for my own artistic expressions.
Q: What can we expect from you in the future? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about?
A: There is more music on the way! I’ve been spending a lot of my time exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of my creativity. I’m so excited and can’t wait to share my upcoming projects with you all.
