Weekday Social – “So Close”

London trio Weekday Social made a noise with “Five Years or So“, but “So Close” takes things in a completely different direction. This track hits with a fresh wave of aggressive, confronting pop-punk energy. It turns out Louise wrote the bones of this song years ago, and bringing in Gavin and Ben to revitalize it as a full band transformed it into something special.

The lyrics dig into that uneasy feeling of drawing nearer to someone while a voice in the back of your head warns you it is probably a terrible idea. It captures a tense, conflicting dynamic that feels incredibly real. That tension shines right through in the cover art too, which features a dimly lit street scene in front of the Kilburn High Road Station bus stop at dusk, complete with slick wet pavement and deep shadows. The dark, solitary mood of the image fits the uneasy, conflicting emotions of the song like a glove.

What makes this release even cooler is its authentic, hands-on production. The band tracked their individual parts at home, and Louise engineered and mixed everything on her MacBook. For a home recording, the sound delivers a surprisingly polished punch that feels loud, lively, and completely intentional. You can easily hear why this faster energy has made the track a go-to set closer at their live gigs, including their performance at the High Tide Festival in Twickenham.

The shift from quiet melancholy to raw, loud confrontation shows impressive range and Weekday Social have carved out a genuinely exciting spot for themselves, proving they can handle tight home production just as well as high-energy live shows.
