Scroungy Dogs – “Midnight Blue”

Ted Wenri and Matt Clark have put together a cool project with Scroungy Dogs. They are surfers from the Ventura and Santa Barbara scene who decided to build an open-door coastal music collective instead of a standard band. Their debut single, “Midnight Blue”, gives you a good idea of what they are about.

The track came out of late-night songwriting sessions, bonfire nights, and backyard jams. It mixes relaxed reggae rhythms and acoustic melodies with a bit of raw folk-punk grit, and Ted Wenri handles the bass, Matt Clark is on vocals, and they worked with producer Jose Alcantar to shape the final sound. Everything feels rough around the edges but completely honest.

The whole point of the song is just a reminder to look up. It talks about how people get stuck staring at glowing screens and miss out on the simple beauty right in front of them, like a sunset, the ocean, or the people next to them. Wenri is a U.S. Air Force Veteran and mechanic, and his no-frills attitude really anchors the track. It is an easygoing song that tells you to put the phone down and be present.
