Daydrunk – “Arithmetic”
Daydrunk is a solo project out of Coffs Harbour, Australia, and “Arithmetic” is the fourth single off an upcoming album, Life Weather. And to be honest, I’m excited to listen to it when it drops.
It’s about the night his wife nearly died giving birth to their second son. The song moves through hospital corridors, the confusion of holding a newborn who doesn’t know their mum, the quiet terror of a family of four becoming three. That last detail is where the title comes from, and it’s one of the more devastating ideas I’ve come across in an indie folk song in a long time.
The production fits the story well. Fingerpicked acoustic guitars, ambient textures sitting low in the mix, gentle electric guitar lines that never push too hard. The vocals stay close and raw, which is exactly right for a song built around this kind of moment. Also, you need to check out other releases by the artist, like “Ordinary” and “Am I Wrong This Time”.
If you’re not already following Daydrunk, this year is a good time to start. He’s building toward something with Life Weather, and this single makes a strong case for keeping an eye on what’s next.
