Francesca & The Apostrophe – “The Apostrophe”

Francesca & The Apostrophe put out her debut single “The Apostrophe”, and I gotta say, this one got to me. She wrote it on her birthday after beating cervical cancer, so there’s a lot of life experience packed into these few minutes.

Her singing is impressive. No production magic covering anything up. You’re basically listening to someone sort through some difficult emotions, and that openness is what grabbed me, and the drums start quiet but slowly get louder, kind of like when your heart starts racing and you switch into survival mode. It matches the internal fight she’s describing.

The whole idea behind the song is about feeling like there’s always been something missing, like living in a space she couldn’t ever figure out how to fill. She’s questioning where she belongs in everything, which is a big thing to explore. She handles it without getting too dramatic or preachy though. The song exists in that weird spot between being fragile and being angry, right where you’re dealing with the gap between expectations and reality.

If you like music that doesn’t sugarcoat things and tells it straight, check out what else she’s been releasing. Follow Francesca & The Apostrophe on social media to catch her next releases.
