Gavin Fox – “Where I Belong”

Irish singer-songwriter Gavin Fox just released a Christmas duet that gets what the holidays are like when you’re far from home. “Where I Belong” is a collaboration with 18-year-old newcomer Lilirose, and it got me right in the chest.

The track is about that specific kind of loneliness that comes around Christmas when you’re away from family because of work, school, or just life pulling you in different directions. Fox wrote this with Irish families in mind, since so many have relatives scattered across the globe, but anyone who’s ever missed someone during the holidays will relate.

Lilirose’s debut vocal performance here is really impressive. Her voice has this earthy quality with a delicate edge that works well against Fox’s more textured, storytelling style. The way their voices play off each other makes you notice the conversation happening between two people missing the same home.

The acoustic instrumentation stays warm and grounded without getting too sentimental or cheesy. Fox wrote something that acknowledges distance and longing without making it depressing, which isn’t easy to pull off. If you haven’t checked out Fox’s previous albums “Awakened” and “Illuminate“, definitely give those a listen too.
