Michael Paul Brennan – “What Could’ve Been”

Michael Paul Brennan’s “What Could’ve Been” is one of those tracks that can stick in your head all week. The recording’s roots at Underground Recording Co. make sense, there’s an intimacy to the sound that doesn’t feel polished to death, and the hand of Mike Machaby (producer, bassist, slide player) feels present without ever getting in the way. You can tell they weren’t trying to chase a sound. They just knew what this song needed to be.
It’s safe to say it’s one of the best songs we featured this week. Also, quick nod to the artwork, a shattered record is bold and fitting, like a memory you keep replaying even though it’s already broken. If you’re not already following Michael Paul Brennan online, now’s the time. He’s got more on the way for 2025, and you’re going to want to hear where this story goes next.
