Sophie Moore – “Trouble in Mind”

Sophie Moore is out with a new 10-track album titled Trouble in Mind, blending UK alt-country and adult contemporary. After spending over two decades working as a professional therapist, the Sussex singer-songwriter has put her focus firmly on her own music again.

The album came together in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, where Moore and a four-piece band tracked the songs in just three days, taking breaks to watch sanderlings along the beach. Producer Mark Nevers, known for his work with Lambchop, brought in an incredible group of musicians. You have Tony Crow on piano, Joe Westerlund from Bon Iver on drums, William Tyler on guitar, Paul Niehaus playing lap steel, and Roy Agee adding horns. Overdubs were later finished in Nashville and Sussex, giving the whole project a rich, easygoing flow.

Her lead single, Closer Than, gives a great taste of what this record is all about. It brings a wistful, elegant mood, urging listeners not to stop taking chances before time is lost. That advice fits her own story well, especially considering her long musical history, from 1980s indie group Foggy Cry to her work with Jeb Loy Nichols. Songs like Down The Road and All The Small Secrets hit with real warmth and honest personal storytelling.
