Segana – “Midnight Masquerade”

Derrick Attwood and Josh Paltoo, the Sydney duo behind Segana, met while studying music writing at JMC Academy, and they have been making synth-pop together since their 2018 hit “Forget You”. Their ten-track album, Midnight Masquerade, takes their music into a darker, sharper realm where the mood suits neon shadows and late night impulses.

The album opens with “Earth to Mercury”, a high energy song driven by pure momentum and lyrics about an inner fire that refuses to slow down. From there, the mood shifts into “Swingin Sixties”, which builds a retro world out of imagery like fast cars, cigarettes, and lipstick. Things take a suspenseful turn on “How Could They Know,” where character-driven verses explore danger and secrecy beneath a slick surface.

The tracklist moves from song to song without losing its edge, and “Dancing in the Rain” brings a romantic, storm-soaked setting, while “You’re the One” slows the pace down with soft vocals and lyrics about devotion and clarity. Then there is “Cherry Crush”, a playful pop track built around a catchy “ch ch ch ch cherry crush” hook.

The title track, “Midnight Masquerade”, anchors the whole idea, using the imagery of masks and blurred identities as a metaphor for transformation. Towards the end, “Feels Like Heaven” and “To Be a Believer” inject a sense of emotional lift, before “Believe” closes out the record on a more honest, confrontational note that asks how someone can believe in themselves when they avoid the truth.

Blair Djuna and Josh Paltoo produced and wrote the tracks, with Leon Zervos mastering the project at Studio 301. Segana managed to build a cohesive, dark-pop atmosphere that gives every song its own distinct corner to explore. The duo put a lot of genuine heart into this work, making the whole listening experience feel grounded and real from start to finish.
