Mutant Thoughts – “Makeshift_DNA”
Mutant Thoughts’ debut album, Makeshift_DNA, is wonderful and I need to talk about it. This Bristol band has put together something wild. It is a mix of rock that completely defies boundaries, blending a digital sound with real analog energy.
The whole record has this dark, atmospheric feel, but it keeps you moving. Han Luis Cera brings in rhythms from his Colombian roots, so you get these bouncing Latin clave beats locking in with incredible, grooving basslines from Josh Lennox-Hilton. It is a brilliant contrast. They pair deep, heavy grooves with a heavy dose of moodiness, creating songs that are deeply evocative while keeping a real pop edge.
You can tell they have refined their sound after working with producer Sylvia Massy and playing festivals like ArcTanGent. This new music goes in deep, exploring technofuturism and the weird gaps in how people communicate. It feels restless and alive.
Honestly, this is exactly what the alternative scene needs right now. It is fresh, unpredictable, and completely captivating. You should absolutely check out their earlier EP, Reality Suspended, to see where they started. Make sure to follow Mutant Thoughts to stay updated about new releases in the rest of this year.
