Matt Saxton – “Rough Patch”

Matt Saxton’s new single “Rough Patch” is beautiful, there’s a rawness to the songwriting that doesn’t force drama, and that’s what makes it relatable. Matt explores the idea of two people sticking with each other even when things aren’t smooth. His vocals are understated but carry a worn-in warmth that fits the theme, like someone who’s been through it and come out the other side without pretending it was easy.

The track doesn’t rely on flashy production or gimmicks, and it doesn’t need to, there’s a sense that Matt knows exactly what he wants to say and doesn’t crowd it with noise. It’s direct, sincere, and unpretentious, everything a good song should be when it’s trying to reflect real life. The cover art is brilliantly on-the-nose without being heavy-handed: a dusty Matt mid-DIY, mask and goggles on, hands on hips. It’s funny and self-aware, and it ties perfectly into the song’s theme, patching things up, literally and figuratively.
