Lost Chimes – “Thousands Are Sailing”

Lost Chimes released “Thousands are Sailing”, and this one really gets to you. The indie folk group tackles displacement and the search for a better life, but they do it by zooming in on one woman’s story, leaving an abusive relationship to find safety.

It’s a tough subject, but they don’t make it heavy-handed. The acoustic arrangements give the song room to tell its story without getting in the way. You hear the pain of having to leave, but also that flicker of hope that comes with taking the first step toward something better. I love music that has a meaning, it makes you feel every word.

The band has been picking up attention from BBC Radio London and Soho Radio, which makes sense when you listen to this. They’re writing songs that actually mean something while still being the kind of music you want to sit with and listen to properly. Lost Chimes connect this personal story to the bigger picture of migration, people leaving behind everything they know because they have to, not because they want to, it’s empathetic without being preachy, and that’s harder to pull off than it sounds.
