Kim Cameron – “Who Drew That?”

Kim Cameron took a creative idea and turned it into eight tracks of pure, high-energy fun on “Who Drew That?”. Making a kids’ record about famous painters and artists sounds like an odd idea, but mixing art history with real dance beats works really well. Instead of talking down to younger listeners, the record blends actual dance music styles like Future House, Microhouse, and Drum & Bass with stories of creative legends. It makes something fresh that parents and teachers can enjoy right along with the kids.

The song “Dreaming Like Dali” is one of my favorites on the record. It uses a cool Microhouse beat to break down Salvador Dalí’s dreamlike artwork in a way that feels easy and fun. Then there is “I Paint”, featuring Vivian Fang Liu, which jumps into a bouncy Future House beat to show off Pablo Picasso and Cubism. It has a catchy rhythm that gets you moving fast. Another favorite of mine, “Barbara’s Color Splash Day”, speeds things up with fast Drum & Bass to highlight pioneer graffiti artist Barbara 62. Adding Michelle Wade Jones on violin and viola next to Suzanne Grzanna’s vocals gives those fast beats a really cool sound.

Other songs cover Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Charles M. Schulz, Chuck Jones, and Gershon Iskowitz, making the whole twenty-two-minute album feel like a quick dance party. With bright animated videos made for every single track on her YouTube channel, the project brings a fresh spark to learning. It never feels like schoolwork; it just feels like a fun dance session that celebrates being creative.
