Katya Redpath – “Time Changes Everything”
Katya Redpath released her debut album, Time Changes Everything. She is in her sixties and spent decades gathering stories and musical influences before making this record. She worked with producer Matt Smith at Austin’s 6-String Ranch and played most of the instruments herself. The album mixes folk, blues, Americana, and roots music with global rhythms.
The nine songs draw on a lifetime of travel and experiences. “Wake Up” opens the record by talking about independent thinking and truth. Another song, “Hot Mess”, brings a fun and lively prairie energy to the tracklist. “Put It in a Song” looks at how music helps people survive hard times, while “The Phoenix” uses old myths to talk about starting over.
Other songs explore different places and ideas. “Zanzibar” travels across cultures with a lively spirit, and “Sueño de Samba” finishes the album with a dance dream. Redpath also spent time living in Paris, New York, and the English countryside, plus running a farm in Vermont. All those chapters show up in the music.
This album sounds like the work of someone who has lived a full life and put real thought into her art. Redpath is already writing new songs and working on other projects, so she is moving forward with her creative life.
