Highlands – “Playing Pretend”

Playing Pretend is Highlands’ first EP and it is a warm, intimate, and honestly just beautiful little piece of music that feels like stepping into someone’s late-night thoughts. It is the kind of music that you would want to listen to with the car windows rolled down or just sit back and let the music take you in.

Sam and Gabrielle were really on point with this melancholic indie folk feel that instantly captures the listener’s attention. There’s this soft, dreamy quality to their music, clearly inspired by artists like Birdy, Kacey Musgraves, and Tom Odell, but it’s also entirely their own. It is easy to tell that these songs are not just produced for the sake of it but are written from the heart.

My favorite song is “Driving Home Now”, which perfectly describes the feeling of finding a home in another person. It’s all about those moments when you are in a car with someone, the music is turned down low, the world is silent and you just let your feelings flow. It’s sentimental and warm in the most beautiful way possible.

What makes “Playing Pretend” so special is that it is so personal and you can feel like every song was written for you. It was recorded in their home studio and you can sense that intimacy in every song. The EP is like a dialogue, about love, fear, and those moments that define life.

This is just the start of it for them and I am looking forward to what they will come up with next. Check out “Playing Pretend” and make sure to follow them on social media to see more of their music and performances!
