George Adequate – “Shipwrecked”
I spent the last couple of hours listening to this beautiful track titled “Shipwrecked”, a song from the new album “Reasonable Things” by George Adequate. After spending years booking acts for KnockanStockan and Sweeneys, and taking a long creative sabbatical, the Kildare musician locked himself away in his studio to experiment with recording and writing on his own. You can hear that patience all over the track. It has the calm, relaxed posture of someone who stepped completely out of the race, kept his expectations entirely reasonable, and made music just because he missed the joy of it.
The song officially came out June 2nd on Nobody Cares Records, and it hits a completely natural sweet spot. Producer Chris Barry handled the engineering, and friends from Underachiever & The Letdowns lent a hand, but the underlying identity belongs completely to George Adequate. It carries an unbothered, easygoing energy that reflects an artist who openly jokes about being existentially exhausted. There are no overproduced studio tricks or desperate attempts to copy what is currently popular on the radio. It is just honest, handmade songwriting available on streaming platforms.
While listening, I kept staring at the artwork. The beautiful watercolor drawing of a bearded man playing a lute in a tiny boat alongside a giant, hairy horned creature in the middle of swirling purple and black waves fits the mood perfectly. It captures that isolated, slightly surreal feeling of drifting off into your own private world.
This track is exactly the kind of grounded, weary songwriting we need right now. It is simple, unpretentious, and completely genuine. For me, it is perfect for a quiet evening. If you like this track, you should definitely check out his previous releases. You should follow George Adequate to stay updated about new releases in the rest of this year.
