Dreaming Soda – “Kissing Stacey”

Dreaming Soda released my favorite track of the month, “Kissing Stacey”. It’s got that polished, confident energy that comes from being road-tested with real crowds. It’s been a fan favourite for a while, and it finally got released thanks to a second successful Kickstarter campaign, which really speaks to the kind of community support this duo has built around their work.

The song was inspired by a wild and surprisingly thoughtful YouTube video about Barbie movies from a queer Marxist angle. Dreaming Soda took that idea and spun it into a tongue-in-cheek pop track that plays with big ideas in a really fun way. It’s smart without taking itself too seriously.

That line, “If Barbie’s into Stacey then what the hell does that make me?” really hit me, it’s funny but also kind of real in a way that sneaks up on you. You can tell they’ve thought this one through, and the result is something playful, catchy, and sharp all at once.
