Dotts O’Connor – “Fail We May”

Dotts O’Connor has a new single out, “Fail We May,” and it’s worth your time. The song comes from that Andrew Weatherall documentary where he met an Irish fisherman who told him “Sail We Must” on the way to a festival. O’Connor took that line and turned it into “Fail We May But Sail We Must” for this track.

The way O’Connor approaches this is pretty straightforward. Bad things happen, plans fall apart, but you keep going anyway. That’s the core of the song and it works because it doesn’t get overdramatic about it.

This was recorded live at the Meadow studio in Wicklow with Rian Trench producing. The lineup includes Brian Dillon on piano, Paul Kenny on drums, and Ken McCabe on bass guitar plus some noise and electronics. O’Connor mentions the melody has roots in traditional Irish music like O’Carolan’s work, which explains why it has that familiar, almost ancient quality to it.
