Dead Feather – “Red Poem”

I want to share with you “Red Poem”, the new single from Dead Feather. He’s a deaf artist from Edmond, Oklahoma, whose work blends poetry, music, and visual art to talk about Native identity.
“Red Poem” actually goes back quite a while, Dead Feather first wrote it in the mid-2000s when he was diving into poetry and trying to better understand his own roots. You can feel that it comes from a very real place, shaped by his search for meaning as a young deaf Native American figuring out where he fits in. It’s tied to history, but also to personal reflection, which gives it a kind of quiet strength.
The track came together with help from Adam Stanley and Isaac Nelson from the band Stanley Hotel, Stanley and Nelson handled the instruments while Dead Feather focused on the spoken word delivery, and the mix of voices and guitars has that old-school rock tone that fits perfectly with the project’s mood, and they did a great job. “Red Poem” feels honest and it’s about sharing experience, you can hear the time, thought, and emotion that went into it. It’s one of the talented ones I’ve covered this year.
