Cries of Redemption x Martina Questa – “What Lies Beneath “

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this one, gothic metal with an opera vocalist is one of the best combo you can hear, and you will love it.

Martina Questa is the real deal here and her voice brings a kind of technical precision that you don’t often hear in this corner of metal, and the way she navigates “What Lies Beneath” is genuinely impressive. There’s real control there, and yet nothing about her performance feels cold or calculated, and she sounds like she means every second of it, and that matters more than any vocal acrobatics. Martina is an artist that deserves your attention.

I just love how the collaboration actually works, because Ed Silva didn’t just slot a guest singer on top of an existing production. The two elements push against each other in interesting ways. Her operatic range doesn’t soften the track’s harder edges, it gives them more room to breathe.

The song has a dark, searching quality that suits both the gothic metal framework and the operatic tradition. This is music built for people who feel things deeply and would rather not pretend otherwise, and that’s been the COR identity all along, and this release makes it clearer than ever.

This is one of the most interesting vocal performances I’ve heard in the genre in a good while. Go back and listen to COR’s previous releases if you haven’t already, because this project has been doing quietly remarkable work for some time now. Follow them before April ends, because there’s clearly more coming. Are you someone who found the bands that changed your life by accident, or do you actually go looking for them?
