Animal Souls – “MOONDANCING”

Animal Souls’ latest album “MOONDANCING” is a genre-surfing collection that brings together a crew of talented collaborators under the creative direction of Michael Fisher. With 12 tracks that mix new material, this LP needs your full attention.
The new songs “May’s Song”, “Between the Lines”, and “Nine Lives” kick things off strong, each with its own tone and pulse. “The Lion and the Snake” and “Soul Dance” show up in reimagined form from their 2021 release and they don’t feel recycled, they sound sharper, more confident. “Take Me Home” and “Lessons of Love” are standouts that hint at the group’s versatility without losing cohesion. My favorite track is “Lessons of Love”.
The guest vocals scattered across the album bring a lot of personality, they feel well-matched to each track and never forced. Ava Wolsynuk, Alison Cowie, Annika Catharina, and others each bring their own flavor, which helps the album stay fresh track to track. The cover art by Michelle Duff is worth a shout, there’s something both cosmic and playful about those moon phases and the silhouetted figures, like they’re celebrating something we’re all quietly a part of.
