Amy Jay – “Mnemonics”

Amy Jay’s new album Mnemonics feels like something she really needed to make, and I just adore it. It’s full of honest thoughts that sound like they’ve been circling in her head for a while, and the kind of stuff that doesn’t always come out right away but eventually finds its way into words. The songs are straightforward in the best way, and it sounds like she made them to sort through her own mess, not to get attention.

The pacing shifts in a way that works, some tracks take their time, others move with a bit more energy, but nothing feels out of place. The mood stays consistent even when she’s digging into topics like insecurity or feeling lost. She doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out, and that makes the whole thing easier to relate to.

The group she recorded with clearly got what she was going for, the playing supports her without pulling focus. It sounds like everyone involved was on the same page. Standouts for me were “Excuse Me”, “Margins”, and “Floral Comfort”, but honestly, the whole thing holds together well.

If you’re into music that’s honest and doesn’t feel overly polished, spend some time with Mnemonics. Follow Amy Jay to keep up with what she’s doing next in 2025.
