A conversation with Christian Larsmon about “Burn The Boats”
Q: Hi! What inspired you to write “Burn The Boats”?
A: I wanted to write a song that captured the frustration of a man being stuck in a job he hates whilst knowing they are capable of achieving so much more by pursuing their passion. That was me about 5 years ago!
Q: How would you describe the overall message or theme of the song?
A: Frustration, Courage and Excitement.
Q: What was the creative process like for this particular track?
A: Like most of my songs, it started on an acoustic guitar. The first vocal part that made sense was the ‘wooaaahh’ that you hear throughout the song. I then built the verses one by one was made sure I was considerate when I thinking about the telling the story to make sure it flowed and made sense.
Q: Are there any specific lyrics in the song that hold a significant meaning to you?
A: I think ‘Burn The Boats’ because it reminds me that in order to succeed at what I’m doing I need to not allow fear or distractions get in the way.
Q: How does “Burn The Boats” fit into the larger body of work you’ve created as an artist?
A: it’s faster paced than the first two singles and definitely has my childhood punk and rock roots written all over it.
Q: Can you talk about any challenges you faced while producing or recording the song?
A: this was actually one of the easiest. I knew exactly what I wanted and Adam my producer smashed it out the park.
Q: How do you think your sound or style has evolved since the beginning of your career?
A: it’s probably matured somewhat since I started playing guitar aged 11. Before releasing this new EP, I was doing a lot of covers and my voice and style of guitar playing just naturally gravitated towards Americana/country.
Q: Who are some of your biggest musical influences and how have they impacted your work?
A: I love stadium rock bands like Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon for the riffs and big chorus’ and I’m also inspired by artists who use their voice as their main instrument like Luke Combs and Cat Stevens.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring musicians hoping to make a name for themselves in the industry?
A: Focus on tunes and building your fan base first. If you do this first, you can actually make a living from it without being signed to a major label which is every artists dream.
Q: Lastly, what can fans expect from you in the upcoming months? Are there any upcoming projects or gigs?,
I have my EP launch show at The Bedford in Balham, London on 26th July. I’ll be performing with a full band and supported by rising stars; Luke White, Alex Hopkins and Sara Shelvin. It’s going to be an amazing night and hope to see you there!
