Freidrich$ – “Doll, Here I Am”

Stripping away the layers of vocal effects and production tricks can be a risky move, but “Doll, Here I Am” relies entirely on that vulnerability. Freidrich$ lets his vocals exist out in the open, unpolished and raw, creating an immediate intimacy between the speaker and whoever is listening. It feels like sitting in the room while someone talks, sings, pleads, or jokes without caring who overhears.

That directness fits an EP fixated on the simple, embarrassing need for someone else’s attention. Across the record, the lyrics return to romantic desire not as some grand poetic ideal, but as an awkward necessity. There is a sharp mix of sincerity and humor running through these songs. You will hear references to Nietzsche, Drake, Conor Oberst, and corpse paint dropping right alongside confessions about past arguments and teenage memories.

My personal favorite on the record is “Wine / The Bardo State”. The EP continually shifts its focus from embarrassingly personal heartbreaks to grand cosmological ideas. On one hand, you have the immediate, quiet wish to pour a drink and dance with someone. On the other, the project explores heavy Gnostic concepts, reincarnation, and the artificial moon. It treats a failed relationship and being trapped in an endless cosmic cycle as two sides of the same fundamental question: how do you escape?

As the project unfolds, those heavy ideas about esoteric cosmology and human isolation feel fully intertwined with ordinary romantic disappointments. It makes for a remarkably honest listen that never takes its own heavy themes too seriously to forget the very real human element at the center of it all.
