ILYA LEVINSON – “Sevdah Medley”
Ilya Levinson is an American composer, pianist, and educator based in Chicago. Levinson is a prolific writer who creates everything from operas to documentary scores for PBS. In addition, Levinson has been nominated for a Grammy award in connection with his participation in the New Budapest Orpheum Society. One of his singles, “Sevdah Medley”, is a translation of the traditional world of Sevdalinka straight to the concert stage.
His creation features various expressions of reverence, love, and longing. Ilya Levinson has worked extensively with classical structures and regionally specific folk genres such as Klezmer, so he knows how to handle traditional material without losing its personality. He translates those old melodies into a modern classical setup while keeping the original spirit intact.
