Ghost of Panama – “The Last Food on Earth”
Finding a collection of music that actually takes you through a real human experience is rare. Ghost of Panama completely nails this on their new album “The Last Food on Earth”. The West London duo, made up of Keith Welham and Cristabel Liu, manages to trace the entire timeline of a relationship, starting from the heavy feeling of being trapped all the way to finding a sense of resolution. It is dark, honest, and absolutely captivating.
The way they build the sonic environment here is incredibly creative. Instead of relying on standard studio setups, they mixed in found sounds captured around London. This choice gives the tracks a gritty, real world texture. My absolute favorite track on the record is “Half-Life”. They completely removed the traditional drums on this one, using a rhythm track made from human breathing and the ticking of a Geiger counter. It is eerie and brilliant. Another standout for me is “The Lift”, which helps anchor the early, tense emotional stages of the record.
The contrast across the ten tracks keeps you locked in. You get immediate, melodic hooks on tracks like “Ghost of Your Perfume” and “Damage”, which balance beautifully against the massive, chilly environment of “Siberia”. Cristabel’s lead vocals guide you through these heavy emotional shifts, while Keith handles a brilliant mix of instruments. Everything leads up to the closing track “North Star”. It is a massive, climbing six minute piece that builds to a huge finish, giving you a sudden burst of optimism right after nine tracks of heavy, dark storytelling. It is a rewarding payoff.
I am completely in love with this album. Ghost of Panama has created a beautiful, cohesive piece of art that feels incredibly honest. If you are new to their music, you should definitely dive into their three earlier EPs to see how they evolved to this point.
