Hoxsey’s self-titled album is a fascinating ride that pulls you right into its world. Based out of Austin, this artist clearly does not care about sticking to normal rules. You get a raw mix of indie rock, avant-garde punk, experimental sounds, and even before pressing play, the artwork sets a mood. It has these fragmented, abstract faces and prominent eyes that perfectly match the strange, uneasy atmosphere of the music inside.

The tracklist moves between completely different styles but everything hangs together nicely. “Humans” is a short, simple acoustic song driven by a folk style. It zeroes in on regular human struggles against overwhelming power structures and dictatorships, carrying a quiet sense of sorrow. Then “Bath Salts” goes in a totally different direction. It is an unsettling, edgy indie-alternative track inspired by documentaries about government mind control. It has a haunting quality where the weird elements become oddly beautiful.

Another standout is “Living in Reverse”, a bedroom lo-fi track with reversed guitar melodies and dub basslines. The hypnotic vocal layers create a hazy soundscape that captures a feeling of emotional distance and routine, and if you want pure tension, “Paranoid by the Sun” delivers post-punk energy built from personal experiences with severe anxiety. It uses spoken-word sections to capture the quiet of isolation, shifting between loud and soft dynamics to mimic psychological overload.

I absolutely love this release. It is honest, unpredictable, and easily one of my favorite projects of the year, and if you enjoy music that explores the darker corners of the human experience with genuine emotion, you need to hear this.
